Injections and swimming Options

I had decided to go to the gym this afternoon for a swim, but have just done my MTX injection.

I am now wondering whether there could be a risk of infection at the injection site? Am I being silly, do you think? I'd appreciate your help

hi jean i swim as well and i thought about this as i inject mtx so i actually changed my day so now jag on thurs which works ok, this lets me swim on my normall tues with some friends who i meet every week, works for me.i do put a very good big waterproof plaster on and a little vasaline first for extra water protection if i do go on the same day as mtx sometimes the notion just hits and i'm fine, no one sees whats under the swimsuit,dorothy

I don't know to be honest but I wouldn't go swimming on the same day as inj. It is probably being over cautious but better safe than sorry. Good tip from Dorothy.

Thanks Sheila. I had already decided not to go. I have decided to go again on Monday as we have an off-peak membership, so can't go over the weekend!

Hi Jean

I would swim first, then do the injection - but if I hadn't had a bath before the injection I would clean the site properly first (with the swabs we are supposed to use, but don't!) ... just in case there were any bugs from the swimming pool on my skin. I wouldn't swim within 24 hours of an injection as I'd be worried about infection if the 'hole' hadn't healed over.

I do make any medication work round my life style rather than the other way round... I'm always having to fiddle around with days and times etc!!

Hi Jean

Bit late as you haven't gone anyway! I wouldn't be too concerned about swimming after an injection, the risk of picking up an infection at the injection site must be minimal and the skin heals so quickly anyway. In my better days, barely remember them now, I swam every day regardless of whether I'd injected and didn't succumb to any nasties! I think sometimes we can easily become overly concerned about RA and actually forget to live our lives!
